The Role

We are seeking a Senior Regional Safety Manager – Residential Services (“RS”) or a Regional Safety Director - Residential Services ("RS") who will work to support regional operations on all Safety matters related to residential services.

The Senior Manager/Director supports the Vice President of Engineering and the Sr. Director of Safety and Health for overall operations safety program implementation and execution. The Senior Manager/Director completes duties as assigned by the VP of Engineering and the Sr. Director of Safety and Health.

The Senior Manager/Director will also coordinate and work closely with local partners which may include Portfolio Maintenance Directors, Portfolio Operations Directors, Community and Maintenance Management in support of AvalonBay Corporate Safety and Health program requirements as well as compliance with local, State and Federal Safety and Health regulations.

The Regional Safety Senior Manager/Director will be required to provide support to multiple community locations and various levels of associates. This function oversees, leads, directs, and will work with AvalonBay leadership to enforce and foster a positive Safety and Health environment. The Senior Manager/Director will assist teams to identify, manage, and control hazardous conditions that may lead to injury, illness, or property loss.

Responsibilities include, but are not limited to:

  • Evaluates and maintains written Safety Programs and policies for compliance, completeness, and effectiveness.
  • Conducts and documents inspections to ensure compliance with AvalonBay Corporate Safety and Health program requirements and community specific Safety plans. Track issues until completion or removal of hazards.
  • Communicates and works with AvalonBay associates and/or vendors to remove hazards and recommend corrective actions for non-compliant conditions based on AvalonBay policies and applicable Safety and Health Regulations.
  • Investigates Safety and Health issues, including incidents involving injury, exposures, and/or property damage.
  • Supports Crisis management related alerts, issues, and resolution. Works with Risk Management to calculate incident rates (TRIR, DART, Etc.) and determine recordability of injuries.
  • Works to protect AvalonBay residents, associates, and property from injury, illness, damage, or loss. Builds working relationships with all associates from various departments to develop fully compliant communities.  Enforces safe work practices and safe working conditions in accordance with all municipal, State and Federal regulations.

Education:

  • Bachelor’s degree in Environmental Health and Safety or equivalent education and/or related experience.

Experience:

  • Seven years of experience in Safety and Health, Risk Management, Worker’s Compensation, Property Maintenance, Industrial Hygiene, or other related fields and/or combination.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:

  • Knowledge of Safety and Health principles including the ability to identify known potential exposures and recommended corrective actions as demonstrated by prior work experience.
  • Possesses management, leadership, and interpersonal skills with the ability to communicate clearly both verbally and in writing.
  • Train non-technical staff on Safety and Health topics.
  • Exhibits a working knowledge of OSHA General Industry regulations, national consensus standards, as well principles of related fields such as Industrial Hygiene, Worker’s Compensation, and Risk Management.

Licenses/Certifications:

A relevant professional certification, or combination, is required. Examples of relevant certifications include:

  • Certified Risk Management Professional (CRMP®), Risk Management Institute
  • Associate in Risk Management (ARM®), Risk Management Institute
  • Associate Safety Professional (ASP®), Board of Certified Safety Professionals
  • Certified Safety Professional (CSP®), Board of Certified Safety Professionals
  • Occupational Hygiene and Safety Technician (OHST®), Board of Certified Safety Professionals
