The Role
AvalonBay Communities is seeking a Manager /Senior Manager, Development to lead and manage all phases of multifamily and mixed‑use development projects across our East Coast portfolio. This is an exciting opportunity for an experienced real estate professional to shape communities, guide complex projects, and influence long‑term investment strategies for one of the nation’s leading multifamily developers.
As a Manager /Senior Manager, Development, you will oversee the full development lifecycle—from feasibility and underwriting through design collaboration, financial analysis, consultant management, and preparation of investment packages. You will build meaningful relationships with industry partners, lead cross‑functional collaboration, and contribute to sourcing new development opportunities throughout the East Coast.
What You’ll Do:
External Relationship Building
Build constructive relationships within the local development community—ranging from project management partners to senior‑level stakeholders
Project Management & Financial Analysis
Lead feasibility and financial analysis, including project pro‑formas, market research, BRFs, and environmental/engineering study coordination
Prepare monthly/quarterly reporting and lead the development of investment packages for the Management Investment Committee (MIC)
Partner with AVB Design to ensure alignment with design and construction standards
Consultant & Vendor Selection
Manage the bid process, including obtaining proposals, negotiating consultant contracts, and overseeing documentation
Collaboration & Leadership
Lead Asset Team meetings, track milestones, drive issue resolution, and help steer project direction alongside Directors and VPs
Sourcing & Business Development
Support market studies, due diligence, site visits, and demographic research for future development and land acquisition opportunities across the East Coast
What We’re Looking For
Bachelor’s degree required; MBA with Real Estate concentration or Master’s in Real Estate Development strongly preferred
Minimum 5+ years of experience in real estate development, construction, finance, design, operations, or related fields
Strong analytical, financial modeling, project leadership, and communication skills
Ability to travel and conduct site visits; comfort engaging in both office and active construction environments
LEED or similar industry certifications a plus
