The Role

This job manages and optimizes utility expenses and utility reimbursements for the organization. The primary responsibility is to develop and implement strategies to efficiently manage utility expenses while maintaining operational effectiveness and transparency. The job collaborates and works closely with various departments to identify areas of improvement and manage energy data used for internal and external reporting. 

  • Budgeting and Forecasting: Develops and manages budgets for utility expenses, and forecasts future expenses as needed. Monitors and reports on performance vs budget and reforecasts.
  • Underwriting: Manage and provide utility expense underwriting for new developments and new acquisitions. Report on underwriting performance versus actuals and serve as the point of contact for utility underwriting needs in the organization. 
  • Utility Billing Programs: Manages and reports on resident billing programs. Responsible for implementing new and supporting ongoing residential utility billing programs and ensuring compliance with all regulatory requirements related to programs while optimizing resident reimbursements.
  • Improvement & Innovation: Identifies opportunities to reduce utilities expense and manages projects to achieve desired outcomes
  • Energy Data & Reporting: Oversees and manages energy consumption data for accuracy and completeness for internal and external reporting. Prepares recurring reports to communicate performance to various partners within the organization which would include but is not limited to, financial performance vs budget and underwriting, and sustainability projects. Collaborates closely with the ESG team to help achieve the organizations sustainability goals.
  • Training & Support: Oversees the training of direct reports, and ongoing training and support for stakeholders. Creates material, resources, and fact sheets to support the organization. 

Minimum Qualifications: 

Education:

  • Bachelor’s degree in Engineering, Business Administration, Environmental Science, or a related field, or equivalent related job experience. 

Experience:

  • At least 7 years of combined experience in budgeting, financial analysis, billing, or vendor/program management
  • At least 1 year of supervisory experience
  • Experience working with public utilities highly preferred
  • Experience with underwriting for new developments preferred

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:

  • Demonstrates excellent analytical capabilities
  • Possesses strong Excel skills
  • Knowledge of energy markets and/or utilities
  • Demonstrates effective communication skills, both verbally and in writing
  • Knowledge in accounting is preferred
