The Role
The Senior HR Business Partner serves as a strategic advisor to Senior business leaders in matters related to organizational and people matters and contributes to enhancing customer service, organizational efficiency, and associate engagement. This role plays a key part in aligning HR strategies with AvalonBay’s strategic business objectives by focusing on effective practices related to talent management, organizational effectiveness, employee relations, compliance, change management, and engagement activities.
We are seeking a partner to support the financial services group including Capital Markets, Financial Planning & Analysis, Tax, Corporate Accounting, Investor Relations, Internal Audit, Risk Management and our Centralized Customer Service Center.
Key Responsibilities
Talent, Performance, and Succession Management:
Partner with leaders to identify, develop, and retain top talent, support succession planning/career development programs
Lead and facilitate Talent Management discussions to assess organizational needs, develop strategic initiatives, and implement solutions that build a sustainable leadership pipeline within designated business units
Provide guidance on development action plans and equip leaders with tailored growth strategies and resources. Recommend career development programs that align with individual and organizational growth objectives
Support leaders in conducting performance reviews, setting goals, and providing coaching for continuous improvement
Collaborate with business leaders to come up with a strategic staffing plan designed to meet future needs.
Partner with regional HR Managers to plan and design regional talent strategies and talent discussions consistent with business unit goals
Partner with other Business Partners and HR functions (Compensation, Recruiting, Learning & Development, Benefits, etc.) to identify organization wide trends and design and implement appropriate strategies
Organizational Effectiveness:
Collaborate with business leaders to assess and refine organizational design, structure, and workforce planning to ensure alignment with business strategy
Drive initiatives that enhance operational efficiency, optimize team structures and workflows, and improve cross-functional collaboration
Change Management and Communication:
Lead HR-driven change initiatives, support leaders in managing transitions, and promote a culture of continuous improvement
Provide HR expertise and strategic leadership on key initiatives and projects that require cross-functional collaboration, broad stakeholder alignment, and effective implementation. Ensure HR solutions are informed by the right input and integrated across all relevant functions
Support leaders in managing change by providing a framework, advice, and support throughout the change process to maximize associate adoption, minimize resistance, and maintain engagements during transitions.
Coordinate with other functional groups to implement changes, and draft and communicate associated HR policy updates
Employee Relations, Policy & Compliance:
Work in partnership with management to provide HR expertise and guidance on employee relations matters, conflict resolution, coaching, counseling, and disciplinary actions
Oversee legal compliance by managing internal investigations, implementing and communicating new legislation, and coordinating employee litigation in consultation with legal counsel to ensure adherence to federal and state laws
Monitor federal laws, regulations, and workplace trends impacting the associate population; collaborate with business partners to identify necessary actions and ensure ongoing compliance
Collaborate with business leaders and HR Steering Committee leaders to update and develop consistent and streamlined policies, programs and solutions
Continuously assesses workforce related risks and works collaboratively with others to implement strategies to address and advise management accordingly
Engagement & Culture:
Collaborate with business leaders to develop and execute employee engagement strategies, using survey insights and feedback to cultivate a positive workplace culture and enhance employee satisfaction
Promote a positive and engaged workforce by identifying and addressing issues that impact employee morale and productivity
Build strong relationships with key stakeholders to ensure support and alignment for HR initiatives
HR Metrics & Analytics:
Analyze HR functional data trends and metrics to identify patterns, inform business decisions and recommend actions based on data insights (e.g. engagement surveys, HR metrics, etc.)
Identify emerging trends and collaborate with business leaders to deliver insights, updates, training, and strategic context that inform effective recommendations and drive meaningful solutions
Qualifications:
7+ years of experience in an HR Business Partner or similar role
Bachelor’s degree in human resources or a related field; Advance degree preferred
HR certification (e.g., SHRM-CP, SHRM-SCP, PHR, SPHR) preferred
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:
Experience in managing organizational effectiveness and talent management strategies (including performance management, employee development, and succession planning)
Expertise in leading and implementing company-wide change management initiatives
Proven ability to build relationships and effectively influence stakeholders at all levels of the organization
Ability to manage multiple projects and initiatives simultaneously
Strong project and time management skills
Displays critical thinking, analytical and problem-solving skills
Ability to analyze HR metrics and translate insights into actionable strategies
Ability to develop strategies to improve employee engagement, morale, and satisfaction
In-depth understanding of HR legislation, employment law, principles, policies, and procedures
Skilled at engaging appropriate stakeholders at the right time to ensure buy-in and appropriately balancing enterprise needs with those of the business unit
Excellent communication and interpersonal skills including clear and concise written and verbal communication
